MIASF helping marinas comply with new security regs
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The task force created by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) in October to help marine businesses comply with new homeland security regulations is offering a free seminar tomorrow, The Palm Beach Post reported in an article today.
Under the regulations, those marina owners who don’t file security plans with the U.S. Coast Guard by December 31 could face daily fines, the newspaper reported.
The task force is targeting marinas that accept large yachts, has contacted about 40 marina owners from Palm Beach County to Key West and expects nearly all of them to attend, according to the newspaper. The regulations apply to any vessel 500 gross tons or larger; and commercial vessels that are 100 tons or larger.
‘The Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 calls for smaller marinas to have security patrols, establish restricted areas, enact tighter identification procedures for employees and install surveillance equipment,’ the newspaper stated. “Officials from the Coast Guard’s Miami office will be at the seminar to answer questions.”
