BoatU.S. doubles funding for clean water program
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has doubled the amount of money available for support of clean boating programs, it reported in a statement today.
Last year, BoatU.S. provided $20,000 to the program and up to $2,000 for each approved applicant. In 2004, both figures will double, as a total of $40,000 is available for the program, and up to $4,000 is available for each applicant.
“Over the last few years, we’ve seen more and more organizations showing an interest in developing clean boating education programs,” explained Ruth Wood, president of the BoatU.S. Foundation. “More money available means more community groups an put their clean boating campaigns into practice.”
BoatU.S. said that the Clean Water Grants are “designed to provide funds to small, local nonprofit groups for projects that educate boaters about pollution prevention.” In the past, topics have ranged from pumpout education to littering prevention. In 2004, the focus topic will be clean refueling of boats, although all clean boating education proposals will be considered.
Last year’s program received 110 application proposals, a 65-percent increase over the previous year. Of those, 13 groups received funding. This year, BoatU.S. will take applications until February 2, 2004. Grant recipients will be announced in April of next year.
