Slip shortage may mean rate increase in Chicago
CHICAGO, Ill. – A boat slip shortage in Chicago has caused the city’s Park District to propose a rate increase in its 2004 budget, according to an article today in the Chicago Sun-Times.
Under the budget proposal, the fee for finger docks would rise from $1,300 to $2,700; star docks would increase from $1,100 to $1,300; and the rate for boats stalls would go up from $110 per foot to $115 per foot, according to the newspaper.
Parks Superintendent David Doig told the newspaper that demand exceeds the number of boat slips available in the Chicago area, which justifies the rate increases.
He cited, as an example, that there are 1,000 boaters on a waiting list for dock space along the lakefront.
The Chicago Park District also plans to layoff 10 employees and eliminate 10 other jobs that have gone unfilled to meet its $351.3 million budget for 2004, the newspaper reported.
A public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. on December 11 at park district headquarters; and the board will vote on the increases and budget at 4 p.m. on December 17, according to the newspaper.
