BWI expands its writing contest
WILMETTE, Ill. — Boating Writers International (BWI) is expanding its 11th annual Boating Writing Contest, which takes place from November through February, with the addition of a new category, a total of 39 awards, and a total prize purse of $18,000, the organization reported yesterday.
A new category, “Gear, Electronics & Product Tests” expands to thirteen the contest categories that will be judged for excellence in creating compelling stories about the boating lifestyle in 2003.
The additions result in an overall prize purse of $18,000 with each category recognizing first ($500), second ($300) and third ($200) place entries.
All winning stories are entered into a “Phase II” competition, which culminates in a single selection honored with the Genmar Trophy and $5,000 award at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in the fall of the following year, the organization reported.
Promotion of the program is also being extended to approximately 6,000 journalists. An updated brochure with contest details, guidelines and entry form is in mail distribution and has been added to the organization’s Web site, where it can be downloaded.
The brochure and widespread distribution is being made possible for the second year by donations from Brunswick Corp., Genmar Holdings and MarineMax. Design and production cost of the brochure was also donated by Wendt Productions, the organization stated.
Last year’s extra promotion produced a 41-percent gain in writers participating, attracting a record 451 entries, according to the organization.
