Honda donates engine to “Monster Garage” show

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Discovery Channel’s “Monster Garage” television show recently challenged host Jessie James and his crew of “maverick mechanics” to create a 28-foot pontoon shark boat. To help complete the project, Honda Marine donated a BF225 4-stroke engine, the company reported on October 23.

The crew had seven days and $3,000 to make a pontoon boat seaworthy. The first day was dedicated to the design process. The next five days were for stripping the boat, installing the Honda engine, cutting a hole in the deck, building a round shark cage and everything needed to create a fast and fearless craft. On the final day, the transformed boat was tested with the sharks, according to the company.

Honda’s 225-hp engine featured the company’s variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system, which gave the shark boat excellent performance and fuel savings. The 60° V-6 with compact, 24-valve SOHC design optimized intake charge and exhaust gases that maximized combustion efficiency, providing an extended cruising range, the company stated.

Discovery Channel’s “Monster Garage” airs on Monday nights from 9-10 p.m. ET/PT.
