Nebraska’s Boat Dealers Act in jeopardy

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. – The watchdog organization Nebraska Watchdog reported that the Boat Dealers Licensing Act (LB 495), designed to protect titles, prevent a variety of unfair or deceptive acts, and require boat dealers to be licensed, is facing an uncertain future as its main promoter, Nebraska State Senator Dave Pankonin, resigned.

The bill is designed to close a loophole where anyone can purchase a boat by claiming to be a boat dealer and receive a dealer’s registration number, allowing them to avoid paying sales taxes on boats they purchase.

While the bill is on hold following the resignation of Senator Pankonin, the loophole will remains open.
