Tsunami causes millions in damage along U.S. coast

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — In the days since the earthquake-caused tsunamis hit the shore of Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast, the amount of damage has become clearer.

According to a report by NPR, a California official estimates statewide damage at an excess of $40 million.

Santa Cruz harbor was particularly battered: 18 boats sank, 100 were damaged and 12 are missing. The damage in Santa Cruz is estimated at $17 million.

Damage at California’s Crescent City Harbor is still being assessed, but 38 boats were damaged and 15 sank. The harbor berths sustained heavy damage, according to the report.
