AMI introduces scholarship in industry veteran’s name
WARREN, R.I. — The Association of Marine Industries honored Neil Ross, industry veteran and International Marine Institute co-founder, with the plaque and the installation of a scholarship in his name at the International Boatyard Conference, according to a recent release from the organization.
AMI will award the scholarship to a marina manager working to become a Certified Marina Manager through IMI, AMI’s training program.
“We want to honor Neil and the many contributions he has made over the years to IMI’s efforts as we educate our industry leaders,” said Jim Frye, AMI’s president and chair, in the release. “We can think of no better way to highlight his efforts than to attach his name to a scholarship that will continue to evoke his influence for years to come.”
Ross started working with marinas in the 1970s while serving as a member of the faculty at University of Rhode Island’s Sea Grant program. In 1986, Ross helped found the International Marina Institute to formally manage educational programs, conduct research, and produce publications. Ross became president of IMI in 1986 until his retirement in 1993.
“Neil has been an educator, leader and advocate in our industry for many years,” Frye continued. “Without his passion for the industry and unrelenting pursuit to better organize and bring professionalism to the marina world, we would not be standing where we are today. This is the highest honor.”
