Study to examine impact of boaters on Washington’s economy
SEATTLE — The Northwest Marine Trade Association and Northwest Yacht Brokers Association have joined together to fund a study examining the economic impact of recreational boating in Washington, according to a recent release from the organizations.
The study will attempt determine whether a vibrant recreational boating industry would improve Washington’s sagging economy by creating jobs and improving its business climate. The study aims to regain the maritime identity that once made Washington state a global leader in recreational boating from a business and tourist perspective.
“We need to reframe the message around recreational boating. What we want to demonstrate is that our state can create a demand for high-paying jobs and increase revenue by supporting the maritime facet of our economy,” said Martha Comfort, NMTA’s government affairs committee chairperson, in the release.
The study, performed by Hebert Research Inc, is expected to be completed by mid-February.
“We need to do a better job making Washington state an attractive destination for U.S. and international boaters to own, store and cruise in Washington state waters,” added NYBA President Alan Powell.
