Marine Trades Association of New Jersey awards scholarships
MANASQUAN, N.J. –The Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ) Foundation recently awarded two education scholarships to students pursuing careers in the marine industry, according to a release.
The $3,000 MTA/NJ scholarship was awarded to Cody Meyer of Port Republic. Meyer, whose family owns Chestnut Neck Boat Works, currently works as a first mate on a charter fishing boat. He recently graduated from Oakcrest High School in Mays Landing and plans to further his marine education at Stockton College in Pomona, N.J. He also plans to study marine fisheries management and work as an advocate and educator for the advancement of New Jersey’s marine resources and the success of the marine industry.
In addition to MTA/NJ’s Education Scholarship, the Automotive Training Center in Warminster, Pa., sponsored a full scholarship to its Marine Technician Program. The recipient of the Automotive Training Center scholarship was Philip Connell of Point Pleasant. Connell graduated from Point Pleasant Borough High School and Ocean County Vocational Technical School and, after completing training, plans to pursue a marine technician career.
The MTA/NJ also awarded two outstanding student awards for the purchase of tools for the trade. Philip Connell from the Ocean County Vocational Technical School and Michael Cullen from the Monmouth County Vocational Technical School were the two recipients of the awards.
This is the fifth year that the association has been able to award scholarships. The MTA/NJ was able to once again double the amount of the scholarship thanks to a $1,500 scholarship award from the Marine Retailers Association of America (MRAA) Education Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation founded in 2004 to provide financial support for education, training and professional development in the recreational marine trades.
“All of these individuals have demonstrated their dedication to the future of the marine trades industry by working hard and incorporating studies of this field into their academics.” MTA/NJ Executive Director Melissa Danko said in the release. “We congratulate them all for their efforts and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”
