Sailboat brokerage sales steady in August
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — Sailboat brokerage sales in August held steady at 523 boats, but market values are trending down, according to the latest sailboat brokerage report from Sail America. Information for the report comes from broker members of YachtWorld.com.
Sail America reported in a newsletter yesterday that August’s sailboat brokerage sales were similar to the prior three months and 14 percent lower than the 605 boats sold in August 2008. From May to August, 500 to 550 sailboats have been sold each month — 20 percent fewer than the same period in 2008.
However, the association also reported that after showing improvement in June (down 8 percent), market values were down 21 percent in July and 33 percent in August. Values were off about 45 percent from January through May.
Year to date, sailboat brokerage sales are down an average of 26 percent, with larger boats, 46-55 feet in length, experiencing a 33-percent decline and small boats doing better, with only a 17-percent decline.
