Sail America launches monthly sailboat market report

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — Sail America has launched a new monthly report of sailboat brokerage sales, courtesy of brokerage sales Web site YachtWorld.com, according to a release from Sail America. A report of the previous month’s activity and annual trends will be issued during the second week of each month.

June’s report notes that through five months of the year, as reported by member brokers of YachtWorld.com, unit sales of sailboats are down by a third, from close to 3,000 in 2008 to less than 2,000 in 2009. The collective valuation of boats that have been sold declined 45 percent, from $236 million to $131 million.

May showed a 28 percent decline, with unit sales of 545 sailboats compared with unit sales of 757 sailboats in May of last year, the report notes. The dollar value of those sales was $38 million this year compared with $67 million last year.

The report also said unit sales and dollar valuations of boats 46 feet and above were off 40 percent or more, while sales of mid-size boats were down roughly a third.
