IYRS hosts marine career information session
NEWPORT, R.I. — The International Yacht Restoration School will host an evening career information session on Jan. 8, the group announced in a recent release. The session will give individuals a chance to learn about training and career opportunities in the marine industry from area employers.
The session runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the auditorium of the Community College of Rhode Island’s Newport Campus. It is “geared to individuals who either have no experience in the field, individuals who have work background in the boating business, and to those such as electrical technicians, electricians, machine operators, and welders who want to learn how to transfer their skills to the marine industry,” according to the school.
“With the high unemployment rates we are facing, individuals need to make careful decisions about where to invest their time to retrain for new careers,” said Susan Daly of IYRS. “This session is an excellent way to gather information about opportunities in the marine field and ways to train to gain in-demand skills. With such a high concentration of marine businesses in Rhode Island, this is a field individuals can consider making a long-term commitment to.”
IYRS offers both short-term training and one- to two-year programs in onboard marine systems and boat building. Individuals interested in job hunting in the field this spring can sign up for a special nine-day course called the Marine Trades Training Program, which trains students in the basic skills needed to enter the boating field and includes instruction in work-readiness skills, offered by IYRS from Feb. 17 to 27. The course is followed by IYRS Marine Industry Career Day on Feb. 28, where individuals can connect with area employers. Financial aid is available to individuals who qualify.
