New yacht association is formed

SEATTLE — Seventeen companies and individuals have united to form the Pacific Northwest Yachting Association (PNYA), whose goal is to further develop the infrastructure for recreational yachting by providing education through vocational training, by expanding knowledge of the region for both tourism and business and by increasing the industry‚s voice in legislative and regulatory areas.

“The yacht industry in the Pacific Northwest is one of the most robust in the world,” said Brooke Stabbert, PNYA’s president. “We are home to some of the largest yachtbuilding and yacht repair companies and have some of the most beautiful cruising grounds anywhere on the planet. Nevertheless, we are one of the least recognized areas among yacht owners and crew.”

The PNYA has already begun working with educational institutions to step up vocational programs that target skills needed by shipyards for new construction and repair. In addition, programs to train crewmembers are being identified and augmented, while issues that involve pilotage laws, customs regulations and tax levies are being addressed with their respective authorities by a select subcommittee.
