MIASF to hold Waterway Cleanup tomorrow

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Marine Industries Association of South Florida will hold its annual Waterway Cleanup tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 36 sites throughout South Florida, the 31st year MIASF has organized and sponsored the event, organizers said in a recent release.

Waterway Cleanup is a one-day event that attracts 3,000 volunteers and 500 boats throughout South Florida to clean up the waterways in Broward County. At each location, participants will receive cleanup instructions, garbage bags, complimentary T-shirts and tickets to the Trash Bash that follows Waterway Cleanup from 2 – 5 p.m.

Participants who come by boat will also receive a free captain’s kit and a commemorative Waterway Cleanup 2008 Boat Flag. Location of the Trash Bash is John U. Lloyd Beach State Park in Dania Beach.

The 36 cleanup sites in Broward County encompass an area from the city of Deerfield Beach in the north, to the city of Miramar in the south and west to Plantation, Coral Springs and Everglades Holiday Park.

Volunteers are needed to work along the shorelines and waterfront, as well as on the water in boats. The event is a great opportunity for neighbors, community groups, clubs and others to learn about and help preserve the marine environment. School students are especially encouraged to participate and can even earn community service hours, organizers say.

In 2007, volunteers collected nearly 67 tons of trash and about 300 miles of waterways in Broward County were cleaned.
