Westlawn to hold design competition

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology is organizing a sailboat design competition in conjunction with Cruising World magazine, and sponsored by Island Packet Yachts, the institute said in a press release Friday. The competition will encourage and highlight new designs for serious cruising under sail. Entered designs must meet criteria posted here.

Designers and sailing experts will judge entries on the design’s potential success and utility as a cruising boat, how well the design meets its mission statement, beauty and innovation, and ease of handling, comfort and safety. All criteria will have equal weight. The judges will select 12 finalists from all entries. From the final 12, one winner and up to four honorable mentions will be selected.

The winner’s design will appear in an article in Cruising World and will receive a $2,000 scholarship to be used toward any Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology course, or a $1,000 check, along with a certificate as the winner of the 2007 Cruising World’s Westlawn/Island Packet Design Competition. Honorable mentions will receive a certificate.

Manual drawing or CAD submissions must be submitted by March 1, 2007. The winner will be announced in Cruising World’s August 2007 issue.
