Slip shortage worsens post-Katrina

GULFPORT, Miss. – Ocean Springs Harbor has had a waiting list since 1994, but following the damage wreaked on the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina, that list has gotten longer, now consisting of about 200 people, WLOX-TV reported in a recent article on its web site.

Ocean Springs Harbor Master Johnny Hughes told the TV station that the problem has gotten worse because of the number of marinas that remain closed, such as Gulfport, or only partially open, such as Biloxi, which is being renovated.

Some businesses – such as the dry dock warehouse owned by David Harris Jr. – are able to benefit from the shortage.

Harris said he has a waiting list for big boats and can only fit a few additional small boats into his facility.

Meanwhile, WLOX reports that the Biloxi Port Commission is making progress restoring marina space at Point Cadet and the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor.
