Industry prepares for National Marina Day

ALEXANDRIA, Va., and CHICAGO – National Marina Day will be celebrated at marinas across the country on August 12, the Boat Owners Association of the United States and Association of Marina Industries said in press releases yesterday and today. AMI produces the annual celebration of the role America’s marinas play as gateways to boating and stewards of the environment.

This year marks National Marina Day’s 5th anniversary and AMI has chosen the Chicago Harbors as the occasion’s headquarters. Westrec Marinas’ Bill Anderson, NMD chairman, will be on hand at the event, along with AMI representatives. There will be a miniature boat show and free motorboat, sailboat, keelboat and dinghy rides from the Rainbow Fleet sailing program. Fishing instruction with the Chicago Park District, a customer appreciation barbeque with entertainment for kids and a boat parade are also scheduled for the day.

BoatU.S.’s 835 cooperating marinas are co-sponsoring NMD. Picnics, music, raffles, charity fundraisers, visits by local elected officials, beach clean-ups, regattas and boat safety demonstrations are all part of the festivities at various cooperating marinas.

“We are excited about the continuous growth that National Marina Day has shown over the years and the number of facilities that are joining the festivities as they celebrate NMD for the first time is very encouraging.” Anderson said.
