NAMS to offer apprentice marine surveying program

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A recreational boating industry-guided program for individuals planning to become certified yacht and small craft marine surveyors has been adopted by the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS), the group reported in a recent statement.

In the past three years, input from an adhoc committee comprised of representatives from consumer (Boat US), manufacturing (NMMA), standards (ABYC) and marine surveyor groups has produced a program that will instruct individuals wishing to enter the marine survey profession, the association stated. Committee participants identified issues of importance each industry segment had with marine surveyors and/or survey reports, and incorporated solutions into the program of instruction to resolve those issues. As a result, the content of the program has the support of the participating entities.

“An individual completing this industry endorsed marine surveyor education program will have a technical knowledge base, in conjunction with the ‘hands on’ input of their NAMS-CMS sponsor/mentor, to enable them to better serve consumers, as well as marine surveyor clients in boat building and repair, insurance, government and the legal professions,” said Greg Davis, NAMS Yachts and Small Craft Technical Committee chairman. “Enrolling in the program will also prepare the individual for successful completion of the NAMS Certified Marine Surveyor (NAMS-CMS) testing routine.”

There are six components to the program:

Basic Marine Electrical – ABYC Classroom
Basic Marine Engines – ABYC Classroom
Valuation Concepts – NAMS Correspondence
Standards Accreditation – ABYC Classroom
Marine Corrosion – ABYC Classroom
Composites Technology – TBD

Cost of instruction is approximately $1,700. Program participants are expected to finalize work in no more than three years. The program is open to both Apprentice and Associate members of NAMS.
