Fishing pubs hold auction to benefit Gulf Coast fishermen

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Fishing Group of World Publications has organized an online auction to raise money for families and individuals in the recreational fishing industry devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the company reported in a recent statement.

Sponsored by Fly Fishing In Salt Waters, Marlin and Sport Fishing magazines, the Hurricane Katrina Relief Auction for Fishermen lets online users bid on various saltwater fishing goods and services such as gear, fishing trips, apparel, and autographed merchandise by fishing celebrities. One hundred percent of the proceeds are targeted to Guide for the Gulf, a nonprofit foundation set up specifically to help impacted charters and guides in the region, World Publications reported.

“All of us at World Publications have friends and industry partners in the region who were left literally with only the shirts on their backs,” said Scott Leon, editor of Fly Fishing In Salt Waters, who proposed the auction. “Doing the auction online allows us to quickly and efficiently raise money to help those most in need.”

The tragedy hits home for Leon, who hails from Biloxi and still has family there.

“With the entire staff of the fishing group working behind the scenes to secure donations, we’re hoping to raise many thousands of dollars that will go directly to impacted families and individuals in the fishing industry,” commented World Publications’ fishing group publisher Glenn Hughes.

The auction runs through 5 p.m. (EST) on November 30 and may be extended if response continues. All winning bids are tax-deductible.
