LIVONIA, Mich. – The Michigan Boating Industries Association recently rewarded individuals for special contributions in helping the organization achieve its goals, honoring them with “Lighthouse Awards” at its early December Recreational Boating Educational Conference, MBIA reported in a recent release.

The first six recipients for 2004 were Steve Remias of MacRay Harbour, Harrison Township, Mich.; Chuck Pistis of Michigan Sea Grant; Jeff Spencer from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality; MBIA Director Pete Matta, owner of Lake Fenton Marina in Fenton, Mich.; Dr. Ed Mahoney from Michigan State University and co-director of the Recreational Marine Research Center; and the Callaweart family, who own and operate Ryba’s Fudge Shops and the Island House Hotel among other businesses on Mackinac Island, Mich.

Remias, Pistis and Spencer were recognized for their efforts to develop the newly implemented Michigan Clean Marina Program. Matta received an award for his dedication to the association’s government relations and legislative efforts. Mahoney was recognized for his educational and leadership contributions, and the Callaweart family has a long history of supporting MBIA activities and boat shows, MBIA said.

The 2004 presentations were the start of what will continue to be an annual series of awards to deserving members and supporters of the Michigan Boating Industries Association and its mission.
