Strictly Sail to feature safety workshops

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sail America, the trade association for the sailing industry, will present sanctioned US SAILING Safety at Sea seminars during Strictly Sail Philadelphia, Jan. 20 and Strictly Sail Chicago, Feb. 4, Sail America reported in a release yesterday.

It will be the first time the program has been offered in conjunction with major boat shows and will give participants an opportunity to review and touch much of the equipment that will be discussed during the seminar, Sail America said.

“It seemed a natural fit to host this very important seminar at our shows this year. We know the people who attend this will receive a great deal from the combined offering,” said Lia Spinelli, special events coordinator for Strictly Sail boat shows.

The US SAILING Safety at Sea Seminar is a certified program for offshore sailors, and is required for many offshore races, some of which require every boat to have a certain percentage of crew who have attended a Safety at Sea program. Its life-saving know-how is useful not only for those who make offshore sailing passages regularly, but also helpful for recreational power and sail boaters, their families and commercial fishermen.

U.S. Naval Academy Vanderstar Chair and Cruising World magazine technical editor Ralph Naranjo will moderate both seminars, teaching participants safe seamanship, heavy-weather tactics and boat preparation.

Participants may also pose questions to a panel of expert blue water sailors and industry experts, such as Steve D’Antonio of Zimmerman Marine, NOAA weather forecaster Lee Chesneau and Captain Henry Marx of Landfall Navigation.

The registration fee of $100 per person ($95 for US SAILING members) includes admission to all four days of the respective shows, as well as associated course materials. Interested participants can register for the program online at www.strictlysail.com, or email Lia Spinelli at lia@sailamerica.com. Advanced registration is encouraged.
