MMTA to hold Marine Issues Summit
MILTON, Mass. – The Massachusetts Marine Trades Association and the Massachusetts Marine Trades Education Trust will sponsor a Marine Industry Issues Summit on Oct. 1 at the World Trade Center in Boston, MMTA said in a press release yesterday.
Keynote speaker Ranch Kimball, secretary of Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will discuss the pressing workforce and economic development issues confronting the marine industry, including the shortage of skilled employees and regulatory obstacles impeding small business growth.
Summit participants will also hear a presentation by Dr. Edward Mahoney of Michigan State University, an expert in the macroeconomics of the marine industry. Dr. Mahoney will discuss recreational boating’s impact on the economy, as well as the need for expansion of public access to the waterfront to spur development and economic growth.
Following the guest speakers, summit participants will break into round table discussions hosted by marine industry and environmental professionals. Topics will include workforce development, public access, environmental stewardship, economic growth, boater safety and the most current legislative issues relative to the boating industry.
“The summit will provide a venue for diverse participants to collectively address our common goal of maintaining and growing the marine industry, which is critical to our national and local economies,” said Greg Glavin, MMTA president. “Essential to this is filling the abundance of open technical positions related to boating.”
