ABYC offers classes and an exam prior to IBEX

EDGEWATER, Md. – The American Boat & Yacht Council will conduct an entry-level electrical class, an advanced composites certification course and an electrical certification review/exam-day preceding the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference Oct. 25-27 in Miami, ABYC said in a release today.

The ABYC Composite Boat Building Certification course and Basic Marine Electrical courses will be held Oct. 20 – 22 at the Holiday Inn – Ft. Lauderdale.

The composite course will be taught by one of Structural Composites, Inc.’s leading instructors. The CBBC program is specifically geared to provide boat builders with a thorough understanding of marine composite construction.

At the completion of the course, and with a passing score on the exam, attendees will earn a designation of ABYC Composite Boat Builder Certification. The fee for this seminar is $550 for ABYC members and $650 for non-members.

The three-day electrical course is designed for the marine technician, marine surveyor, and boat builder with minimal or no electrical experience. It will begin with basic theory and walk through the ABYC electrical standards. Other topics to be covered will include, AC & DC standards, trouble-shooting practices, alternators, battery chargers, and bonding. The fee for this seminar is $429 for ABYC members, $589 for non-members.

ABYC will also hold an electrical certification review and exam on Oct. 23 at the same location. Bonnie Barsa, ABYC’s education director said the review and exam are designed for very experienced marine electrical technician who are familiar with the ABYC electrical standards.

“It is also good for those who self-study, and those technicians who are due for their re-certification,” Barsa said.

The fee for the review and exam is $359 for members.
