Westlawn grad wins Bluewater design competition
EDGEWATER, Md. – Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology graduate Doug M. Frolich has won Bluewater Sailing magazine’s most current design competition, Westlawn said today in a press release.
The competition, judged by former Sparkman & Stephens design chief Bill Langen and designer Rodger Martin (former chief naval architect at Derecktor Shipyards) called for a serious cruising sailboat that could store a Walker Bay rigid inflatable dinghy, and launch and retrieve it easily, Westlawn said.
Frohlich’s design (a 45-foot Bluewater Cruiser) solved the dinghy issue with a unique approach, using a cantilever jib boom to double as an electro-hydraulic dinghy-launch crane.
“The design is handsome and well proportioned,” said Dave Gerr, director of Westlawn. “We can look forward to more unique and exciting designs from Doug Frohlich and other Westlawn alumni in the future.”
Frolich, who worked for North Sails for many years and learned of the contest on the Westlawn Web site, gave the credit for his success to Westlawn’s training.
“I was informed that my design was chosen as the winner, thank you Westlawn,” he said. “I would have never noticed this competition without your Web site, and certainly would not have been capable of developing the design without the know-how your course provided.”
