NMMA reports unit boat shipments remain down
CHICAGO, Ill. – Wholesale dollar sales of all boats were up 6.9 percent in 2003 through October, compared to prior year numbers, while unit boat shipments were down 5.1 percent, based on the October Monthly Shipment Report (MSR), the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) reported in a statement yesterday.
The traditional powerboat segments, (outboard, sterndrive, and inboard boats) were up 9.0 percent in terms of dollars and up 0.4 percent, in terms of units shipped for October YTD, compared to the previous year, according to NMMA.
“We are still looking at positive year-end results at both wholesale and retail levels in the traditional boating segments based on numbers reported in NMMA’s monthly MSR, third quarter power boat registrations and Info-Link’s Bellwether States Index,” said NMMA director of Market Statistics Jim Petru.
NMMA’s MSR tracks manufacturers’ shipments to dealers for both boats and outboard engines using a control group of boat and engine manufacturers. The number of companies participating has increased to 134, compared to 118 last year. The 2003 boat control group represents about 85 percent of the overall boat marketplace while the 2003 outboard engine control group represents about 95 percent of the market.
