SAIL Magazine to launch sailboat maintenance title

BOSTON, Mass. – SAIL Magazine will launch a new magazine in April titled BoatWorks for the Hands-On Sailor, according to a statement today from PRIMEDIA Inc., which will publish the magazine.

BoatWorks targets sailors who enjoy maintaining and improving their own boats and like to keep them in good working order. It will be filled with ideas, projects, and tips and will combine illustrated, step-by-step project guides with advice on various aspects of boat maintenance, repair, and upgrades, the publishing firm reported.

“The majority of the recreational sailboats sold in the U.S. each year are used. Most sailors take great pride in what they sail, want to protect their investment, and spend some degree of time working on their own boats,” said Peter Nielsen, editor of SAIL and BoatWorks. “SAIL covers maintenance, but with all our coverage of other aspects of the sport, we often can’t devote as many pages as we would like to simple boat care. BoatWorks will provide sailors with more in-depth maintenance information than we are able to provide in SAIL every month. Anyone selling products that can be used to upgrade, improve, or help maintain those boats will now have a new tool for reaching those sailors.”

Charlie Doane, SAIL’s senior editor, will head up the editorial of the premiere issue.

BoatWorks, with a distribution of 75,000, will go on sale at newsstands around the U.S. on April 14, and will be available via direct mail and through sailmagazine.com. It will be published at least once in 2004, according to PRIMEDIA, and may increase its frequency in 2005.
