World Publications continues acquisitions strategy
NEWPORT, R.I. — World Publications has grown its presence in the recreational boating industry with the acquisition of Trawler World magazine, which it will incorporate into the launch of its forthcoming title, Power Cruising, the company reported in a statement today.
The acquisition is part of World Publications’ larger strategy to expand its involvement in the boating, travel, food and wine markets.
World Publications’ Terry Snow recently told The Orlando Sentinel that he wants to double the size of his business in the next five years.
New magazine to publish two issues in 2004
The new magazine, Power Cruising, is set for a February 2004 debut and will explore the lifestyle of cruising on power boats, which the company said is a growing market. The acquisition includes trademarks, circulation, advertising and Web site assets.
Power Cruising will target affluent readers who own motor yachts, express cruisers, and of course, trawlers, according to World Publications.
“With the launch of Power Cruising, we saw an opportunity with Georgs Kolesnikovs’ Trawler World to merge his magazine into ours and gain an advantage in this particular segment of the power cruising market,” said Sally Helme, publisher of Power Cruising.
The deal moves Kolesnikovs from owner and publisher of Trawler World to editor-at-large on Power Cruising, reported the company.
“World Publications has the resources and the experience, especially with outstanding magazines such as Cruising World, to serve the cruising powerboat market better than anyone else,” he said.
Kolesnikovs has spent the last four decades working in newspapers and magazines, serving as editor or publisher. Before his role at Trawler World, he was editor of Circumnavigator. In 1996, Kolesnikovs founded the West Marine Trawler Fest series and launched TrawlerWorld.com. He hosts Trawler World List, a forum about trawlers on the Internet and is editor of Trawler World News, an electronic newsletter.
Power Cruising will publish two issues in 2004 before moving to a bimonthly schedule in 2005.
In addition to Power Cruising, World publishes 14 other special-interest magazines, including Sailing World, Cruising World, Marlin, Sport Diver, Sport Fishing, WaterSki, Boating Life, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, Kiteboarding, WindSurfing, Wake Boarding, andCaribbean Travel & Life.
