West Marine reports slight sales gain

WATSONVILLE, Calif. – Net sales for boating retailer West Marine, Inc. were $34.6 million for the four weeks ended Nov. 27, an increase of 0.4 percent from November 2003, when net sales were $34.5 million, the company reported in a press release yesterday.

Comparable store net sales for November 2004 decreased 2.9 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

West Marine said net sales for the 47 weeks ended Nov. 27 were $636.7 million, an increase of 4.9 percent over net sales of $607.3 million for the same period a year ago. Comparable store net sales increased 0.7 over that same span compared to 2003.

“November sales came in as expected,” said John Edmondson, CEO of West Marine. “Comparable store sales were challenged because last year the Thanksgiving Day closure was in fiscal December, while this year the holiday fell into fiscal November. After adjusting for the calendar shift, comparable store sales would have been relatively flat. We are on track to meet our previously announced expectations for fourth quarter.”

Edmondson said November comparable store sales by region showed declines in the Northeast (-8.5 percent) and West (-6.6 percent), with a slight increase (2.1 percent) in the Southeast.
