Boating writer Roy Attaway dies

BEAUFORT, S.C. – Roy Attaway, who at various times was the editor of Yachting, Boating, and Motor Boating & Sailing magazines, has died. Attaway passed away Sunday night, May 9, in Kansas City, Mo.

Attaway was born in 1937 in Walterboro, S.C. He was a “celebrator of life, a much beloved writer, lover of gourmet food, the outdoors and the University of North Carolina, droll (Roy word) humorist, and a friend to all in the boating industry,” according to a family statement.

In addition to his magazine work, Attaway wrote a memoir of his childhood in South Carolina titled, “A Home in the Tall Marsh Grass.”

A funeral service will be held in Beaufort, S.C., on Monday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church.
