The Future: An open letter to President Trump

Dear Mr. President,

You have a big job, in fact, the biggest. I cannot imagine the number of items you must consider each day. Therefore, I want to be respectful of your time while also asking you to consider some thoughts that I believe are critical to the future of our country.

Mr. President, as you know, the world is changing very fast. Changes are coming from a lot of different directions, including technology. Increasing computational power is driving exponential technological developments that will dramatically change the world in the next 10-15 years.

These inevitable technological developments will be incredibly disruptive as they reset the economic landscape. However, they will also provide amazing opportunities unlike anything the world has seen.

Mr. President, I believe we are at an inflection point and how we react today to these upcoming changes will determine if the U.S. can maintain our economic security and continue to lead the world in the decades ahead. I hope the U.S. will not only stay ahead of these changes but also lead the globe in technological development.

The development of technologies like virtual reality, robotics, biotech, 3D printing, the internet of things, renewable energy and electric vehicles are already well underway and will create many tremendous global business opportunities. Unfortunately, companies that don’t lead in the adaption of these technologies risk being put out of business.

Then, of course, there are the three real game changers; nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. Further development of any of these three technologies could potentially reset the geopolitical and economic power structure of the entire globe.

Mr. President, as you know, countries around the world are working hard to develop these technologies with the goal of resetting their economic and global standing. However, no country is better suited to lead in each of these areas than the United States.

Mr. President, I encourage you to set a bold vision for the United States that inspires us to look forward and lead in each of these areas. These technological changes will drive the global economy in the decades ahead and with the right leadership from you the U.S. can develop and maintain its leadership position for a long time after your presidency. In my opinion, this is an incredible opportunity for you to positively impact the next few generations of Americans.

Finally, Mr. President, this is not just an economic issue, it is also a clear national security issue. I know you want the U.S. to be strong and, in my opinion, casting a big vision for the U.S. to lead in these areas is a certain way to ensure we do remain strong.

Mr. President, as John Kennedy did decades ago with his call to put a man on the moon, I hope you will not only inspire us to look forward and be the clear leader in the development of these technologies but also direct the resources of the U.S. government to help ensure that happens. It would be a great gift from you to the next generations of Americans.

  1. Holy cow, what a surprise. I’m expecting to read some plea from Bill about tariffs on steel and aluminum and instead, its one of the best BIG PICTURE messages about what we need as a nation that I’ve read. I printed it out to send to friends. It’s now or never for this country in my opinion and if we can’t turn this around right now I doubt we ever will in my lifetime. I still have Bill’s book on management in the boating industry on my desk. One of the real leaders in our industry.

  2. Bill,
Very thoughtful letter regarding our future as Americans moving into the next few decades. Only hope he reads it and responds in a positive manner. Be interested in his response.
