1. April outboard engine shipments, sales increase

U.S. outboard engine shipments were up 11.5 percent year-over-year, NMMA reported this week.

Sales were up 22.2 percent in dollars over the same period of time.

2. Rhode Island marina fire destroys six boats (Video)

A fire at the Rhode Island Yacht Club in Cranston, R.I., burned at least six boats and a dock over the weekend.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

3. NFIB: Health Insurance Tax will cost more than 150,000 jobs

The National Federation of Independent Businesses Research Foundation has released a new report estimating that 152,000 to 286,000 private-sector jobs will be lost by 2023 because of the tax requirements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Fifty-seven percent of the job losses will come from small businesses, the NFIB said.

4. National Small Business Week kicks off

This week is a celebration of small businesses, with workshops, events and panels put on by the Small Business Administration and other groups.

The week is designed to make sure small business are aware of the resources available and to encourage consumers to shop small.
