1. Hobie Cat founder dies

Hobart Alter, surfing innovator and inventor of the namesake Hobie Cat, passed away Saturday at the age of 80 after a long bout with cancer.

Alter received the Waterman Achievement award from the Surfing Industry Manufacturers Association in 1993 and was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in 1997 and the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2011.

The company also posted a tribute to him on its website.

2. Palm Beach attendance up 3.1 percent

Nice weather helped drive a 3.1 percent attendance increase at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Organizers also said there was a 6 percent increase in the number of boats in the water at the show this year.
