Powerboat sales continued on a positive trend in January, gaining 12 percent year-over-year for all powerboats 15-foot or greater, among Bellwether states, according to the latest data from Info-Link Technologies.

The rolling 12-month index showed sales of all powerboat categories gaining marginally on the previous year, though the pace seemed to be slowing slightly in a few major categories.

The biggest portion of the market, outboard boat sales, was up 14 percent year-over-year among Bellwether states following a peak growth rate around 15.5 percent in November. The growth of outboard boats seems to be slowing slightly among Bellwether states, but still showing significant gains year-over-year.

Data for the outboard market across all boating states, available through September, shows the bellwether states leading the rest of the boating market in sales. Sales among all boating states were up around 10.8 percent year-over-year in September 2012.

Performance in the Sportfishing boat category has been slowing over the past few months as well after reaching a more than five-year high in sales growth during November 2012. Despite slowing 5 percent since November, sales growth for the Sportfishing boat market was up 20.5 percent year-over-year in the first month of 2013 among Bellwether states.

For all boating states, the sportfishing boat market followed a trend just below bellwether states, rising to near 20 percent growth year-over-year, 2 percentage points behind the bellwether average.

Growth too for smaller segments

PWC and Ski boat sales are rebounding from a shrinking market a year ago, and both managed near 10 percent growth for the respective markets during January. PWC sales have been steadily growing month-to-month since April 2012 and, year-over-year, were up around 9 percent among bellwether states during January 2013 and 5 percent year-over-year for the entire boating population during September 2012.

Ski boat sales managed 10 percent year-over-year growth among bellwether states in January and 7 percent year-over-year growth across the boating population in September of last year.

Sterndrive sales among bellwether states have been up just below 2 percent year-over-year during November 2012 to January 2013. Sales of sterndrive boats among all states managed to grab slight growth for the market for the first time in more than five years, inching up just below 1 percent growth for the entire boating market year-over-year during September 2012.

Data from Info-Link Technologies' Bellwether Report is based on new U.S. boat registrations. The bellwether states specifically are derived from data from states representing roughly half of the U.S. boat market, geographically dispersed, varying by market segment and time of the year.
