Torqeedo brings BMW i battery technology to marine industry

Torqeedo has made automotive battery technology available for boats by offering BMW i high-capacity batteries via a recently signed supplier agreement. The first boats equipped with BMW i batteries are already in operation or are close to completion, including motor boats, sailing yachts and commercial marine applications such as water taxis.

The BMW i3 battery has been adapted to work with Deep Blue, Torqeedo’s most powerful solution for inboard, outboard and hybrid systems up to 160 hp. The company says the durable high-capacity batteries from industrial production offer the highest energy density currently available in boating – at a lower cost per watt hour.

This design is ideal for boat applications that may require shock resistance. The prismatic cell design is built to allow efficient cooling, a compact size and even temperature distribution within the battery – with a rugged structure protecting the cells. An optional, progressive cooling system is designed to guarantee maximum performance and a long service life in high ambient and water temperatures.

“BMW i batteries are a model of exceptional reliability and performance in electric mobility. They allow us to deliver cutting-edge electric propulsion and integrated energy management for both recreational and commercial applications,” said Christoph Ballin, co-founder and CEO of Torqeedo.

“The selection of BMW i high-capacity energy storage for Torqeedo‘s Deep Blue drive system is further proof that performance, innovation and sustainability are not mutually exclusive,” says Alexander Kotouc, head of product management for BMW i. “The successful adaptation of state-of-the-art automotive technology to the water is a testament to the comprehensive development priorities of BMW i.”
