YMCA students ‘absolutely love’ Carefree Boat Club

CORNELIUS, N.C. – For the third consecutive year, the Lake Norman Carefree Boat Club provided boating experiences and education for local elementary school students in the YMCA Y-Readers program. Four Mondays during the summer the YMCA bused approximately 100 students to the Carefree Boat Club, located at Morningstar Kings Point Marina in Cornelius.

This year a “Gutter Regatta” was included in the activities, where children raced toy sailboats down two parallel water filled rain gutters by blowing on their sails. The children were also able to take home a toy sailboat as a souvenir. Additional activities included a scenic pontoon cruise, learning the parts of a boat, coloring nautical oriented pictures and story time.

“The kids absolutely love it!” said Allison Barfield, one of the instructors with the Y-Readers program. “Most of the students we serve have never been on a boat before; several have never even seen the lake! Providing them with this experience to ride on a boat and see sights is an experience that they will never forget! The boat drivers are excellent with the children and do a great job of making the boat ride an
‘adventure’. Even when the students are on land, they are having a blast reading books, racing sail boats, and playing games. “

Located at Morningstar Kings Point Marina in Cornelius, Carefree Boat Club provides its members access to a variety of boats with none of the work of owning a boat, for significantly less money, plus access to more than 30 locations nationally at no addition cost.
