Canada extends hours of operation for Trent-Severn Waterway, Rideau Canal

Bolton, ON (June 26, 2014) The National Marine Manufacturers Association Canada (NMMA Canada)  applauds the federal government’s announcement this week extending the hours of operation for both the Rideau Canal and Trent-Severn Waterway. In time for the Canada Day weekend, a total of 112 hours will be added to the navigation schedule throughout the course of the entire boating season.

“This is a great achievement for recreational boating and the result of our industry’s unified advocacy efforts,” said Sara Anghel, executive director/vice-president of NMMA Canada. “We commend the government for working together with the recreational boating industry and keeping the likes of boaters top of mind. The extended hours of service encourages boaters to travel these historic waterways, naturally boosting tourism and Canadians’ time spent on the water.”

Recently, a national program dedicated to promoting the boating lifestyle, Discover Boating Canada, a program managed by the NMMA, offered a list of the best boating locales, and the Trent-Severn Waterway and Rideau Canal are among the top boating destinations in Canada this year.

According to the announcement from the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister Responsible for Parks Canada, the extended hours of operation support tourism and economic development, and helps Canadians connect with experiences along the waterways. The Economic Impact of Recreational Boating in Canada: 2012 reveals that the recreational boating industry is a significant economic driver for Canada, generating $8.9 billion in revenues, contributing $5 billion to GDP, and employing nearly 70,000 people.
