Horseshoe Beach, FL – December 18, 2012 – Captain Sammy Royal, owner of Sea Tow Horseshoe Beach (Florida), was honored with a Coast Guard Certificate of Merit at the Sea Tow Awards Banquet on November 14, 2012. The event capped the 2012 Sea Tow Annual Meeting held in Orlando, Fla., in November.

Captain Richard M. Kenin, Chief of Staff, Seventh Coast Guard District (Fla.); Captain Peter F. Martin, Chief of Search and Rescue (CG-SAR) for the U.S. Coast Guard, and Sea Tow Vice President of Operations Robert Backhaus presented the Certificate of Merit to Capt. Royal during the awards ceremony.

The Certificate reads: “The Commandant of the United States Coast Guard takes great pleasure in presenting the Coast Guard Certificate of Merit to Capt. Sammy Royal, in recognition for service to the maritime community and the United States Coast Guard. On July 17, 2012, Capt. Royal of Sea Tow Horseshoe Beach responded to an emergency distress broadcast from the 24-foot fishing vessel, MUGLY OTHER, which was sinking 11 nautical miles west of Steinhatchee, Florida, with four people on board. Although Coast Guard units rapidly deployed, the vessel’s location required a lengthy transit time.

“With severe thunderstorms in the area, visibility of a half nautical mile and the possibility of people in the water, the situation was dire. Captain Royal quickly responded to the distress call. While outbound, he queried the operator of a nearby vessel for information concerning the vessel in distress. The operator provided…a last known position. While en route to the position, Captain Royal located the vessel’s passengers clinging to coolers, struggling to stay afloat. He expertly recovered all victims from the water. Captain Royal then located the capsized vessel, righted it, and towed it to shore. His actions saved the lives of four people and reflected the time-honored tradition of mariners aiding others in distress. Captain Royal's performance of duty is most heartily commended and is in keeping with the highest traditions of public service.”

“We at Sea Tow also applaud Capt. Sammy Royal for his quick thinking, exemplary actions and expert boat handling skills. He saved four lives and brings great credit to Sea Tow and the marine assistance industry,” said Sea Tow Founder & CEO Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer. “This is another example of Sea Tow’s ongoing partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard.”
